7 Tips for Optimal Childrens Dental Health

As a parent, your children's dental health is an important issue for you. It is important that you teach your children to take good care of their teeth. Taking care of their teeth is an investment in their overall good health throughout the rest of their lives.

Here are seven tips to help your children to achieve optimal dental health:

Tip #1 - Lead By Example - One of the best ways you can teach your children to take good care of their teeth is to lead by example. You should take excellent care of your own teeth and make sure that your children see you actively doing it. By doing this you are showing your children that teeth matter and taking care of them is important.

Tip #2 - Brush Twice Each Day - Teach your children to brush their teeth twice each day. Buy them a good toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste to use. Most importantly, you should be showing your children how to brush their teeth and not letting them do it on their own until you are satisfied that they are doing it correctly.

Tip #3 - Floss Your Teeth Daily - It is important to floss your teeth each day. This removes the plaque which builds up between teeth and at the gum line. If the plaque is not removed it turns into tarter which requires professional cleaning to remove.

Tip #4 - Eat Well - It is always important to teach your kids to eat a well-balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables. It is also important, for their dental health, that they limit their intake of sugary and carbohydrate laden foods.

Tip #5 - Use Fluoridated Toothpaste - It is important to have your children brush their teeth with fluoridated toothpaste. You should be showing them how to use just a small pea sized amount and how to rinse out their mouth and not swallow the toothpaste.

Tip #6 - Take Your Child for Regular Check-Ups and Cleanings - It is vitally important that your children get regular check-ups and dental cleanings. Many of the discount dental plans of today actually allow you to pay very little, if anything, for preventative care for children.

Tip #7 - Have Dental Sealants Applied - As your children's permanent teeth come in, your dentist can apply dental sealants to them. The sealants help keep the teeth from getting decayed by plaque. Good dental sealants are inexpensive yet last for a very long time.

These tips should help you to insure your children have the best dental health possible. For specific questions please see your pediatric dentist.
